Things That Stop Me in My Editing Tracks

I'm editing a book about eating healthful foods, and there's a list of foods that should be in the healthy person's kitchen. I come across this entry:

European soldier

Given all the military conflicts—currently going on and threatened—around the world, I immediately think, Hmmm. Did the author make a Freudian slip? But just in case his phrase is correct but just missing a word or two, I do a web search on European soldier, looking for images. I now know that there is such a food item as European soldier beans.

World, I hereby call a cease-fire. You're disturbing my editorial peace of mind.

I've never heard of them. How interesting. And I'm really into growing my own beans and drying them. We make chili and freeze it (everything home grown except the beef) – and we like to put a variety of beans in soups. Did you know a beans and corn combo form a complete protein? I love beans – and they’re really cool to handle as well; the way they slide through your fingers like marbles. That book sounds like fun. Please post info on when it’s coming out. I’m always interested in books on cooking.

Beans are terrific, FLS, for both their nutritional value and for the way they feel, as you say.

The book I edited isn't about cooking per se but rather about eating well for good health. It's Dr. Perricone's 7 Secrets to Beauty, Health, and Longevity, coming in November from Ballantine Books.
