Checking In

My daughter's wedding was lovely and lots of fun. I have photos, taken by my technophobe father-in-law with his traditional camera, so I'll have to scan them all before I can do anything with them, but I don't yet have time to post them because I'm swamped with work.

Things That Stop Me in My Editing Tracks

I'm editing a book about eating healthful foods, and there's a list of foods that should be in the healthy person's kitchen. I come across this entry:

European soldier

Given all the military conflicts—currently going on and threatened—around the world, I immediately think, Hmmm. Did the author make a Freudian slip? But just in case his phrase is correct but just missing a word or two, I do a web search on European soldier, looking for images. I now know that there is such a food item as European soldier beans.

World, I hereby call a cease-fire. You're disturbing my editorial peace of mind.

Why Every Author Needs an Editor

I'm peeking out from under a heavy workload and my daughter's impending wedding to share this.

The staff of the scientific editing department at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has come up with a wonderful poster [link updated 3/7/07] that illustrates why researchers writing medical journal articles need editors. Though the poster is targeted at STM (scientific, technical, and medical) writers, the editors among you may also find it helpful in visually demonstrating why authors of any stripe need editors.

The poster is featured in an article in the July–August issue of Science Editor, the journal of the Council of Science Editors.
