In the Library

Library cabinetToday's photo is of a library cabinet built and installed in a mansion by My Husband the Master Cabinetmakertm. The wood is pecan with a light brown stain.

You can see what unstained pecan looks like here, on the web site of a company that isn't the one Ed works for. If it were my cabinet, I'd much prefer unstained pecan. For that matter, I prefer any wood furniture to be unstained, protected by clear lacquer. Wood is gorgeous in its natural state; I've never been able to understand why other people think it has to be stained.

You can tell by the shipping blankets on the floor that work in the room isn't finished.

Kathy,

Wood with a clear finish that has no pigment at all will discolor over time much more rapidly (and more unevenly if it's partially exposed to the sun) than wood protected by a stain. But it can be a light stain that complements the wood; it doesn't need to be dark. Talk to Ed; I think he'll confirm this.

Of course, I've been wrong before. So let me know if I'm wrong this time, too.

You're right, Dick. But having an in-house cabinetmaker means that any furniture of mine that gets discolored (or dented by rambunctious sons) can be stripped, sanded down, and relacquered.

Yeah, well that's nice for you. But those of us who like to live beyond our means can't afford that level of professional furniture maintenance ;-)
